Campus Martius was Detroit's central public square, laid out in the early 1800s and long the hub where the city's main streets came together. This photochrom captures it around 1900, when the Detroit Publishing Company was producing hand-colored-look views of American towns using a process that transferred photographs to lithographic stone, giving the scenes their soft, saturated color. The panoramic format shows the plaza and the streets radiating from it, offering a sense of how the downtown was organized and how busy it was in the years before the automobile dominated city streets.
