The University of Michigan's Ann Arbor campus is the subject here, a place that grew from a small territorial institution into one of the largest public universities in the United States. The university was founded in 1817 in Detroit before moving to Ann Arbor in 1837, when the town was chosen for its central location and the promise of land and support from local residents. Its campus took shape around the Diag, the central walkway that still anchors the grounds, and the school became known for its professional schools and research programs. Look at the older stone buildings and the open lawns to see how the layout reflects the university's growth over the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
