The Indiana State House sits on a square block in downtown Indianapolis, a city that became the state capital in 1825 after the seat of government moved from Corydon. The building in this view is the Greek Revival structure completed in 1888, which replaced an earlier capitol that had grown too small and too worn for the state's business. Its dome and columned front made it a point of civic pride, and the grounds around it have long served as a gathering place for political rallies, parades, and public ceremonies.
