Titled for a sitter named Delphine Hyle, this December 1919 glass negative shows a debutante posed with her pets, as the caption list describes. The title comes from notes made by the National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio whose early twentieth-century portraits and news pictures form a large part of the Library of Congress holdings, so the name is best read as provisional. Herbert A. French gave the negative to the library in 1947. Look closely and you may see streaks and blemishes, the result of the original coatings deteriorating over the decades, which are part of the object's physical history.
