Mona Blodgett is the name the National Photo Company gave this image, recorded on the negative or its sleeve, though it has not been independently verified. The picture is dated December 3, 1919, a few months after the armistice ended the First World War, when outdoor leisure was returning to normal in Washington's social circles. The Washington-based company documented much of the capital's public and social life, and its caption list files this scene under society on horseback and in the parks. Look closely at the glass itself, because the streaks and blemishes across it come from the natural deterioration of the original coatings and are part of the object's history.
