Maria McCormick is identified in the original caption as one of several prominent Cuban girls studying in Washington, D.C., so this portrait belongs to a small group of images documenting young foreign students in the capital. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio active in Washington in the early twentieth century, made the glass negative in November 1919, when the city drew many visitors and students from abroad. The glass plate has streaks and blemishes from the natural breakdown of its coating, and those marks are worth noticing as a sign of the negative's age.
