A steeplejack, a worker who climbed church spires, chimneys and other tall structures to make repairs, is the subject named in this picture's title, which identifies him only as Kellian, S.E. The National Photo Company, which produced and labeled the negative, wrote that name on the negative or its sleeve, but the Library of Congress notes that the title has not been verified. The glass negative dates to about 1918 to 1920, and its streaks and blemishes come from natural deterioration of the original coating, a common condition in glass plates of that age.
