Five people named in this record, four of them leading figures of the pictorialist movement, make the subject plain: a jury gathered in Philadelphia around 1899 to judge work for a juried photographic salon. Gertrude Käsebier, Clarence H. White, F. Holland Day and Frances Benjamin Johnston all championed soft-focus, art-driven photography that sought a place beside painting and printmaking. The Philadelphia salons of the late 1890s were among the main showcases for that work. Henry Troth, a Philadelphia photographer tied to the city's camera circles, belongs to the same local picture, and the group portrait offers a rare look at who was deciding what counted as art photography at the turn of the century.
