Joseph Ripka's mills anchor this view of Manayunk's 21st Ward, a riverside district on the Schuylkill where water power drove much of Philadelphia's early textile industry. Manayunk grew up along the river and its canal in the 19th century, and it became part of the city of Philadelphia in 1854. The record has no date, and the name W.H. Rease on the shelflist card is unverified, so the picture is best read as a view of the mill district's working landscape.
