Paradeplatz, the open square at the center of Karlsruhe, anchors this view, with the Kaufhaus, a department store, rising beside it. The city was laid out in 1715 by Margrave Karl Wilhelm of Baden, with avenues fanning out from his palace, so the square sits where the main streets converge. The print is a photochrom, a color process developed in Switzerland in the 1880s that built up color from several printing stones. The Detroit Publishing Company sold such views in America, and this one is listed in its 1905 catalog as number 8273.
