Charles Batties is identified here as a soldier of the 6th Colored Infantry Regiment, one of the Black units raised for the Union army between 1863 and 1865. After the Emancipation Proclamation, many African American men enlisted in such regiments, and their portraits were often made in small cartes de visite like this one, which were inexpensive to produce and easy to send to loved ones. The albumen print format was common from the 1860s through the 1880s, and the Library of Congress holds this example in its Gladstone collection.
