Five designers stand together at a Walker Art Center opening in Minneapolis in 1975, with Charles and Ray Eames at the center of the group. Their companions, George Nelson, Alexander Girard, and Hugh De Pree, were all tied to the Herman Miller furniture company, which had shaped modern American interior design since the 1940s. The Walker, a leading modern art museum in the Midwest, drew design figures like these to its openings. The picture records a moment when the people who defined mid-century modern furniture and textiles gathered in one room.
