Tourists riding mules along a trail at the Grand Canyon in 1920 make an unusual pairing of animals and visitors, and the scene captures a kind of travel that was still new to the park. Grand Canyon National Park had been established only a year earlier, in 1919, and pack animals carried sightseers down the canyon's trails to its viewpoints. Mule trips like this, run under concessions tied to the Fred Harvey Company, were a central way most visitors experienced the canyon before automobile travel became common.
