A portrait of William Mackall, identified in the title as chief of staff of the Confederate Army of Tennessee, survives on this glass negative. The record dates it to 1860, which sits awkwardly with the title because the Army of Tennessee was not organized until 1862, and the title itself comes from an unverified note on the negative sleeve. The image was made by David B. Woodbury, who died in 1866, using the wet collodion process, which was widely used for portraits in the 1850s and 1860s and required the sitter to hold still through a short exposure. The negative is now part of a larger collection of Civil War glass negatives held by the Library of Congress.
