Excelsior Springs, a small town in the northwest corner of Missouri, took its character in 1909 from its mineral springs, which drew invalids and vacationers who came to bathe and drink the waters for their health. Hotels, bathhouses, and boarding houses lined the streets around the springs, and the local economy depended on those seasonal visitors as much as on farming in the surrounding countryside. Railroad connections brought guests from Kansas City and farther afield, and the resort reputation gave the town a civic identity that residents took pride in. A view of the town from this period would have shown a community built around the springs, where the steady flow of health seekers shaped daily life and local business.
