Missouri in 1909 was still a state of farms and railroad towns, with more than three million residents by the 1910 census and a rural population that outnumbered its cities. Corn, hogs, cattle and mules anchored county economies, and farm families sold their produce in small towns where the depot, grain elevator and general store marked the center of trade. St. Louis and Kansas City drew workers into breweries, meatpacking plants and shoe factories, so a farm family could reach a city by rail in a day. This view of farm and city life captures a state standing between those two worlds, where the countryside still set the rhythm of the year.
