In 1909 Independence, Missouri, remained the seat of Jackson County, but its fortunes were increasingly tied to Kansas City, a few miles west, where packing houses, rail yards, and grain dealers drew workers and capital from across the region. Electric streetcar and rail connections had shortened the trip between the two towns, so shoppers, clerks, and salesmen now traveled the same roads that had once carried Santa Fe freight. Independence kept its civic identity around the courthouse square, with its churches and older brick storefronts, and residents also knew the town as the home of the Temple Lot, the ground Latter Day Saints had claimed since the 1830s. The photograph records a community that was still a county town at heart, even as the growing city next door reshaped its daily life.
