State Street runs down from the center of Boston toward the harbor, and this engraving captures the point where the street met the water, with ships and wharves close to the city's business district. The plate is credited to S. Lacey and follows a drawing attributed to W.H. Bartlett, a British topographical artist whose American views were widely reproduced in steel engravings for illustrated books and magazines in the decades around 1840. Such views were valued for recording the working waterfront and street life of a growing port city, and the Old State House, built in the early 1700s, stood at the head of the street as one of its best-known landmarks.
