The caption identifies the sitter as Mrs. Jack London, wife of the novelist whose *The Call of the Wild* had made him famous by 1903. Charmian Kittredge married London in November 1905, so the portrait dates from the start of her years as his wife. It was made by J. Purdy of Boston, and the glass negative is one of many the Bain News Service supplied to newspapers as news photographs. The record notes that the title comes from caption data the service did not verify, so the name is best read as the label the photographer or agency gave the picture.
