Dr. Stanley Hall sat for this 1904 portrait by J.E. Purdy of Boston in the same year his two-volume study *Adolescence* appeared. Hall was a psychologist who led Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts, and he helped found the American Psychological Association in 1892, making him one of the first American scholars to treat childhood and youth as a serious field of study. The picture reached the public through the Bain News Service, a photo agency whose caption cards were often written in haste, so the identification and Boston credit are worth confirming against other sources.
