Two names, A.P. Gardner and J.E. Purdy, give this 1901 negative its title, but the record flags that the caption data is unverified, so who they were and what brought them before the camera in Boston is not settled. The Bain News Service, a New York agency, supplied news pictures to newspapers, and its glass negatives document the working side of that trade. Small glass plates like this one were the raw material of press photography, and they show how pictures moved from the photographer's studio to the printed page.
