A carriage carrying William Howard Taft as he leaves Boston is the detail that sets this glass negative apart from the other pictures on the board. The record dates it to September 1909, a few months into Taft's presidency, when visiting dignitaries were often photographed moving through city streets on their way to public engagements. The image comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by a New York news photo service that supplied pictures to newspapers. The title is taken from the agency's own caption data and has not been independently verified, so the exact occasion of the departure is best read as provisional.
