Soldiers bound for Boston are the subject here, shown aboard the U.S. Army transport Kilpatrick, a government ship used to carry troops and supplies between American ports. The glass negative comes from the Bain News Service, a New York agency that sold photographs of current events to newspapers in the early twentieth century. The caption, "The Boys in Blue," is a nickname from the Civil War era for Union soldiers, and it was still used loosely for American servicemen at the time. The record notes that the title comes from agency data that has not been independently verified, and the negative is dated 8/13/09.
