The title names two figures, Gen. Thomas Gage and "the Boston boys," which sets this engraving apart from the city views on the board. Gage commanded British troops in Boston from 1774, when the Coercive Acts closed the port and brought soldiers into the town, and relations between the garrison and local residents grew tense. Young Bostonians often mocked and pelted the redcoats, so a scene of boys confronting the general captures a familiar friction of those years. The caption card gives no date, so the print may have been made in the 18th century or later as a retrospective view of the Revolutionary period.
