Curling on Jamaica Pond in Boston, Massachusetts, captures a winter sport that was once a regular pastime on the city's frozen ponds, set in the Olmsted-designed park system of Jamaica Plain. The record dates the image only to the 1890s, so the exact season is uncertain, but the scene reflects a period when skating, sledding, and ice games drew crowds to the water after a hard freeze. Curling, a Scottish game played by sliding stones across ice toward a target, had a devoted following among Boston's Scottish and Canadian communities. The print offers a useful look at how urban parks were used for recreation in the late nineteenth century.
