Jamaica Pond, in the West Roxbury area on the edge of Boston, is the setting here, and the print shows skaters on its ice. The lithograph was drawn and published by J.H. Bufford, a Boston firm known for color prints of the period, and it dates to about 1859. Ponds like Jamaica were popular winter gathering places, and the pond was also a source of ice cut and shipped for sale in the mid-1800s. Color lithographs such as this one were sold to a middle-class public, so the scene reflects how city residents spent leisure time in the winter.
