Jamaica Pond, in West Roxbury on the edge of Boston, is the setting here, shown as a winter gathering place for skaters. Boston lithographer J.H. Bufford published this color print around 1859, when inexpensive lithographs of city scenes and local leisure sold well to a growing middle-class public. The pond was also valued for its ice, which was cut in winter and shipped out during the New England ice trade, so the frozen surface served both work and play. The print is worth a close look for how it turns an ordinary winter pastime into a polished view of suburban countryside.
