The record names two men, Chas. E. Townsend and J.E. Purdy, with a Boston connection, though the title comes from caption data the Bain News Service supplied and has not been independently verified. This 1904 glass negative belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by a New York-based news photo agency that sent pictures to newspapers across the country in the early 1900s. Glass plates like this one were the standard working medium of the period, and they preserve fine detail that later prints from them often lose. Because the record is brief, the sitters' roles and the occasion are not documented here.
