Secretary of War William Howard Taft and Mrs. Taft appear in this picture at the Harvard-Yale regatta on the Thames River at New London, Connecticut, in June 1908. The race was a fixture on that stretch of water for decades, drawing alumni, families and society guests to the riverbanks each summer. Taft was then serving in President Theodore Roosevelt's Cabinet, and he had recently won the Republican presidential nomination. The Bain News Service made the photograph on a glass negative, but its title comes from data the record marks as unverified, so the identification is worth reading with that in mind.
