Rather than the race itself, this glass negative shows the boat landing at New London, Connecticut, where the Harvard and Yale crews came ashore on the Thames River. The two universities had met on that water in an annual regatta since 1878, and New London became the regular setting for the contest, drawing crowds of students, alumni and reporters. The picture belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by a New York news photography service that supplied images to newspapers in the early 1900s. The title comes from caption data that the record describes as unverified, so details of the scene are best read with that in mind.
