This picture shows Harvard's second varsity crew, a rowing eight identified by the "Henley" in its title, which most likely points to the Henley Royal Regatta on the Thames in England, where American college crews raced in the early twentieth century. The record gives no date, so the exact occasion is unconfirmed. The image comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, made from glass negatives by the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied newspapers with news photographs from about 1900 through the 1920s. The second varsity, or junior crew, was the squad one step below the top boat, so the photograph shows the men who trained to fill those top seats.
