This glass negative shows a second varsity rowing crew from Harvard, with the title tying it to Henley, the English regatta on the Thames that has drawn college oarsmen since the nineteenth century. The caption comes from notes made by the Bain News Service, so the exact race and crew details are not fully verified. The picture dates to 1914, the year before the United States entered the First World War, when intercollegiate rowing was a major part of campus life in Cambridge and Boston. Bain's agency sold news photographs to newspapers across the country, which is why images like this one survive in the Library of Congress collection.
