Secretary of War William Howard Taft is the figure this photograph is built around, pictured at the Harvard-Yale crew race on the Thames River at New London, Connecticut. The regatta had been held there each summer since 1852, drawing crowds of students, alumni and spectators to the riverbanks. Taft, a Yale graduate, had recently been named the Republican nominee for president, which made his appearance at the race a newsworthy one. The photograph comes from the Bain News Service, a New York agency that sold news pictures to newspapers across the country.
