Rowers in a Harvard shell pull toward the finish at New London, Connecticut, in this view of the freshman race, which the caption identifies as the winning boat in the Harvard-Yale regatta. That contest had been staged on the Thames River at New London since the late nineteenth century and drew large crowds to the riverbanks and the water. The record dates the photograph to June 25, 1908, and the spectators along the shore show how much the event meant to students and alumni. The glass negative came from the Bain News Service, a wire operation that supplied newspapers with fast, newsworthy pictures, so the image reflects early twentieth-century sports photography. The title comes from unverified caption data, so the boat and its result should be read with some care.
