This glass negative pairs a conductor with his wife, a dancer, which sets it apart from the other Boston pictures on the board: Ralph Lyford is identified as assistant conductor of the Boston Opera, and Mrs. Lyford, born Ella Gillis, as a member of the company's ballet. The Boston Opera Company gave seasons at the Boston Opera House in the years before the First World War, and a backstage portrait like this would have been made for the press to publicize its performers. The Bain News Service, a New York agency, produced most of the images in this collection, and its caption details were not always checked, so the names here are best treated as the agency's own record. The date is not recorded, but the Bain archive's pictures are generally from the early 1900s through the 1920s.
