The lithograph advertises the Morris Brothers' Opera House in Boston, a venue named for the Morris Brothers, who were known as minstrel performers in the 1860s. Printed around 1867 by A. Trochsler & Co., a Boston lithographic firm, it is one of the many theater posters of that decade, when lithography was the standard way to make bold, eye-catching announcements for shows. Such posters were pasted on walls and billboards around town, so they served both as advertising and as a record of the entertainments that drew urban audiences in the years after the Civil War.
