The Boston Opera House stood on Washington Street in the city's downtown theater district, and this c1909 view captures it around the time it opened. Built in the boom years before the First World War, it was one of several large opera houses that impresario Oscar Hammerstein financed in American cities, and its Boston run drew wide attention in the city's theater world. The photograph was made by the Dadmun Company, a Boston firm that issued street and building views, so it offers a documentary record of the building's exterior and its place on a busy commercial block.
