This 1861 Currier & Ives lithograph ties President James Buchanan to South Carolina Governor F. W. Pickens and Georgia's Robert Toombs, and it also points to Fort Pulaski at the mouth of the Savannah River. Georgia state forces seized the fort in January 1861, weeks before Buchanan left office, and Toombs was among the most vocal advocates for leaving the Union. New York publishers such as Currier & Ives issued many cartoons on the secession crisis, and this one presents the movement as a costly miscalculation, a message that would have resonated with Northern readers uneasy about where the states were heading.
