Its title, *The true peace commissioners*, reads as a jab at the peace men of 1864, and the names in its record set the scene: Jefferson Davis and Robert E. Lee appear alongside Union commanders Ulysses S. Grant, William T. Sherman, Philip Sheridan and David Farragut. Published by Currier & Ives in New York that year, the lithograph is probably the work of John Cameron and ties into the Democratic National Convention held in Chicago in 1864, whose platform called for a negotiated peace with the Confederacy. Its argument that only military victory would bring peace was a common one in Northern political prints of the period.
