Drawn by John L. Magee and published in Philadelphia in 1856, this lithograph shows Democratic leaders pressing slavery on a reluctant free-soil settler. Its subjects are James Buchanan, Lewis Cass, Stephen A. Douglas and Franklin Pierce, and the setting is Kansas, where the 1854 Kansas-Nebraska Act let settlers decide the slavery question by vote. The violent struggle there made Kansas the central issue of the 1856 presidential campaign, and the print's references to Cuba and Central America reflect Northern fears of further expansion of slave territory.
