Its title, *Secession exploded*, and the presence of John Bell among its subjects set this 1861 Cincinnati lithograph apart from many cartoons of that year. Bell, the Tennessee statesman who ran for president in 1860 on the Constitutional Union ticket, had urged compromise as Southern states left the Union after Abraham Lincoln's election. Entered for copyright in June 1861, weeks after the attack on Fort Sumter, the print reflects the Unionist feeling strong in Ohio and the border states, and its listed subjects, from Georgia and Louisiana to Kentucky and Baltimore, show how the crisis was seen spreading across the country.
