Few pictures show two New York landmarks as clearly as this one, with the temporary Victory Arch spanning Fifth Avenue near Madison Square and the Flatiron Building rising beyond it. The arch went up in 1919 to welcome home soldiers returning from the First World War, and it was built of temporary materials rather than stone, meant to stand only for the celebrations. The Flatiron Building, completed in 1902 and designed by Daniel Burnham, was already one of the city's best-known skyscrapers by then. The photograph was made by Irving Underhill, a New York photographer who registered his work for copyright.
