Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th president, appears here in a portrait from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of glass negatives produced by the Bain News Service, a New York photo agency that supplied newspapers with pictures of public figures in the early twentieth century. The record gives no date, and the title comes from unverified caption data, so the exact sitting is uncertain. Still, the pairing of a Roosevelt portrait with a Bain negative places the image in the years when Roosevelt, a famously vigorous public presence, was among the most photographed men in the country. Bain's large-format glass plates from this period are valued for their sharp detail and for the record they keep of the era's public faces.
