Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th president, is the subject of this glass negative, one of many portraits the Bain News Service made of him during his years in public life. The Bain agency, founded by George Grantham Bain in New York, supplied news photographs to newspapers from the early 1900s until the 1920s, and its negatives were later deposited with the Library of Congress. The record gives no date, and its title comes from unverified caption data, so the exact sitting is uncertain. Roosevelt's presidency, from 1901 to 1909, was a period when press photographs of political figures were becoming a common feature of daily newspapers.
