The "Str." in the title marks this as a steamboat, and the S.N. Parent was one of the many river craft that the Detroit Publishing Company recorded on glass negatives in the early 1900s. The 8 x 10 inch plate gives the vessel a sharp, detailed view of its hull and superstructure, which is useful for anyone studying the working boats of the period. Steamers like this carried freight and passengers along rivers that were then the main routes into the interior, before railroads and highways took over much of that traffic. The negative reached the Library of Congress in 1949 as a gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
