The launch of the steel freighter *F.P. Jones* at Wyandotte, Michigan, on March 8, 1913, is the event this glass negative records. The sponsor, the woman who traditionally christens a new vessel, and a couple posed for the photographer, so the picture captures the ceremony as much as the ship itself. Great Lakes freighters of this period carried iron ore, coal, and grain between lake ports, and their launchings drew crowds from local shipyard towns. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm known for its wide-ranging views of American places, made the image.
