This view of Kara-Kevi, the Galata waterfront district of Constantinople, shows a part of the city that linked the Golden Horn to the hillside quarter of Pera, where many foreign embassies and merchant houses stood in the late 1800s. The print was made by the photochrom process, a Swiss method that printed color from hand-tinted photographic plates, and it was later issued by the Detroit Publishing Co. in its 1905 catalog as number 6039. Photochrom views like this one, made in the 1890s, offer a record of the city's streets and shoreline at the end of the Ottoman period.
