Where many WPA posters promote a particular service or event, this silkscreen print from the Illinois WPA Art Project pairs the Statue of Liberty with a single pointed phrase, "Democracy ... a challenge." The Works Progress Administration's federal art projects employed artists during the Depression, and silkscreen allowed flat, bold color in inexpensive editions meant for public display. A date stamp on the back reads August 1, 1940, placing the poster in the year the United States was debating its stance toward war in Europe, when the statue stood as a ready emblem of what was being defended.
