Eugenie De Land's color lithograph uses the Statue of Liberty and the American flag to urge viewers to buy a U.S. government bond, the call of the Second Liberty Loan of 1917. Congress authorized the Liberty Loans to pay for American participation in the First World War, which the country had entered in April 1917. Posters like this one were printed in large numbers and displayed in shop windows, post offices and public spaces, where they tied the war effort to familiar national symbols. The statue's presence in the design links the appeal to New York Harbor and to the idea of liberty itself.
