A lithograph from 1917 casts the Statue of Liberty as the one asking for help. Its caption, "You--Buy a Liberty bond lest I perish," turns the monument into a plea addressed directly to the viewer. The United States had entered the First World War in April 1917, and the federal government raised money for the war through Liberty Loans, a series of bond drives sold to ordinary citizens. Posters like this one, signed by C.R. Macauley and carrying the slogan "Get behind the government," were displayed widely to persuade people to lend their savings to the cause. The poster shows how wartime artists used a familiar national symbol to make a financial appeal feel personal.
